Heating Oil #1 or #2: what’s the difference?
Heating Oil #1, also known as light heating oil, is more refined and more fluid than Heating Oil #2. Its composition allows it to resist freezing, making it an excellent choice for outdoor installations or regions with harsh winters. Thanks to its lighter nature, it burns more cleanly, reducing deposits in heating equipment and extending its lifespan. It is particularly recommended for tanks exposed to cold or systems requiring a more responsive fuel.
Heating Oil #2 is the most commonly used type for residential heating. It is denser and offers slower combustion, making it an economical and efficient option for heating large spaces. Quebec’s Regulation respecting oil-fired heating appliances prohibits installing a new appliance (since December 31, 2021 in new construction and since December 31, 2023 in existing buildings) and restricts major repairs on appliances more than 20 years old, but everyday use and regular maintenance remain permitted. Since December 31, 2023, replacing an oil-fired heating appliance with an appliance running on a fossil fuel (including propane) is prohibited in the residential buildings covered by the regulation.
